adventures in korea... so this past friday, along with my multilateral north korean relations class we had a special field trip to some random places around the DMZ. i had already been to the places we went, but it was nice to go again with a better idea of what i was seeing...^^
at 도라산역 (dorasan station), you can now officially take a train to pyeongyang...although it's not authorized, and i don't think there is yet to be a train that has gone to NK from this station. i guess everyone is just hoping for an optimistic future.
not the clearest of days...but over there would be NK. if you look through the binoculars you could actually see buildings and gaesong industrial complex and things like that. if you've been here you know there is a yellow line where you can take pictures up to, and past the line no pics allowed! so speaking of pictures... an incident for you. we also traveled to the #3 tunnel, and walked all the way down it and walked back up. again for those of you who have done this not the easiest of tasks. technically no pictures are allowed there, so they told us to put all of our stuff in a locker. well little did i know that i forgot to take my camera out of my coat pocket. so here we were thinking we were being all clever and snapping pics here and there. we KNEW there were cameras watching our every move, but we were def trying to steer clear of them. regardless by the time we got back to the top they knew and was on the hunt to find the camera, so i had to give in and show them my pictures. so then i had to delete them in front of them...and then sign a paper agreeing to the fact that i was a violator. boooh~ otherwise i would have had pics like these people:
these folk for sure violated, but they got by!!! sneaky~~~ (btw i found this picture just by googling third tunnel... they totally got away with it AND they put this pic on the internet. i'm sure the NK government has already tracked it down somehow) and a final note, we also went to the north south immigration(?) office...literally this is where, if it was allowed, that people would cross back and forth from the north and the south. technically there are southers going north working at gaesong industrial complex, but no northerners coming our way. anyways, at this place you can buy north korean products such as this:
some interesting stuff. a lot of my classmates bought some north korean wine...and we sampled a little. just have to say, not the highest quality of stuff (of course considering the situation) |
